Norio Matsumura majored in documentary filmmaking at university in Japan.
He joined the Japanese public broadcaster NHK in 2011 and has served as a director in its Natural History Unit since 2016. He has made programs documenting wildlife across a vast range of environments, including land, sea, air, and the polar regions.
In 2021, he served as a juror for the behavior category at the Wildscreen Festival in the United Kingdom.
Norio’s latest work, the international co-production “Deep Ocean: The Kingdom of the Coelacanth,” has been broadcast internationally on networks including the BBC. The project has received international acclaim, earning a prize for cinematography at the Venice TV Award competition in Italy, a prize for content creation at the IBC Innovation Awards in the Netherlands, and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award at the 66th Science and Technology Film Festival in Japan.
