Penguins of the Point
Penguins of the Point is an intimate short nature documentary about the King, Gentoo, and Magellanic penguins living at Volunteer Point in the Falkland Islands. Filmmaker Derek Robitaille documents the daily lives of these three species as they hunt for food, endure harsh weather, and raise their chicks.
Beyond the standard seasonal cycles of breeding and moulting, the film examines three major modern threats facing the colony: climate change, commercial overfishing, and avian influenza. Instead of using a sensationalized tone, this documentary takes a observational approach to show how human activity and rising ocean temperatures are impacting a remote ecosystem.

Derek Robitaille is a photographer and cinematographer based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, with a passion for nature and travel. After four years working aboard cruise ships and the rare privilege of visiting all seven continents, he honed his craft through extensive travels, drawing inspiration from landscapes, cultures, and wildlife. Though new to filmmaking, Derek has gained experience in documentary and corporate storytelling, particularly within Indigenous communities across Canada, and most recently received an award for his debut production, Penguins of the Point, at the 2025 Wildlife Conservation Film Festival.
